No Means No

I think a lot of parents feel it’s important to explain their reasoning to their children in an attempt to get them to understand. Realize that along the way, wanting your child to understand can easily shift into wanting their approval, or their acceptance of your reasons. When this happens, parents can get stuck in a dynamic where they’re over-explaining things to their children. I personally think that once you’ve given your child a reasonable amount of input, any further explanation defeats the purpose. Have you fallen into the habit of over-explaining and over-negotiating with your child? If so, it’s likely that every time he wants to challenge your authority, decision, or rule, you keep talking to him in order to get him to understand why you’ve made the rule in the first place. And often as your child gets older, you'll find yourself compromising some more and changing the rules a little more. Understand that what you’re really doing is training your child not to accept the rules. Read Full Article

Veterans Day

November 11: General Interest 1918 : World War I ends At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside CompiƩgne, France. The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, France, and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or more lives. In addition, at least five million civilians died from disease, starvation, or exposure. On June 28, 1914, in an event that is widely regarded as sparking the outbreak of World War I, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, was shot to death with his wife by Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Ferdinand had been inspecting his uncle's imperial armed forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina, despite the threat of Serbian nationalists who wanted these Austro-Hungarian possessions to join newly independent Serbia. Austria-Hungary blamed the Serbian government for the attack and hoped to use the incident as justification for settling the problem of Slavic nationalism once and for all. However, as Russia supported Serbia, an Austro-Hungarian declaration of war was delayed until its leaders received assurances from German leader Kaiser Wilhelm II that Germany would support their cause in the event of a Russian intervention. On July 28, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, and the tenuous peace between Europe's great powers collapsed. On July 29, Austro-Hungarian forces began to shell the Serbian capital, Belgrade, and Russia, Serbia's ally, ordered a troop mobilization against Austria-Hungary. France, allied with Russia, began to mobilize on August 1. France and Germany declared war against each other on August 3. After crossing through neutral Luxembourg, the German army invaded Belgium on the night of August 3-4, prompting Great Britain, Belgium's ally, to declare war against Germany. For the most part, the people of Europe greeted the outbreak of war with jubilation. Most patriotically assumed that their country would be victorious within months. Of the initial belligerents, Germany was most prepared for the outbreak of hostilities, and its military leaders had formatted a sophisticated military strategy known as the "Schlieffen Plan," which envisioned the conquest of France through a great arcing offensive through Belgium and into northern France. Russia, slow to mobilize, was to be kept occupied by Austro-Hungarian forces while Germany attacked France. The Schlieffen Plan was nearly successful, but in early September the French rallied and halted the German advance at the bloody Battle of the Marne near Paris. By the end of 1914, well over a million soldiers of various nationalities had been killed on the battlefields of Europe, and neither for the Allies nor the Central Powers was a final victory in sight. On the western front--the battle line that stretched across northern France and Belgium--the combatants settled down in the trenches for a terrible war of attrition. In 1915, the Allies attempted to break the stalemate with an amphibious invasion of Turkey, which had joined the Central Powers in October 1914, but after heavy bloodshed the Allies were forced to retreat in early 1916. The year 1916 saw great offensives by Germany and Britain along the western front, but neither side accomplished a decisive victory. In the east, Germany was more successful, and the disorganized Russian army suffered terrible losses, spurring the outbreak of the Russian Revolution in 1917. By the end of 1917, the Bolsheviks had seized power in Russia and immediately set about negotiating peace with Germany. In 1918, the infusion of American troops and resources into the western front finally tipped the scale in the Allies' favor. Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies on November 11, 1918. World War I was known as the "war to end all wars" because of the great slaughter and destruction it caused. Unfortunately, the peace treaty that officially ended the conflict--the Treaty of Versailles of 1919--forced punitive terms on Germany that destabilized Europe and laid the groundwork for World War II. TV Stand For Your TV

It is funny but our living room always has to have a TV. But the old fashion TV's always took up a lot of room. I mean the big TV's that were like three or four feet wide because of the space from the wall to keep them cool. But now we have this awesome thin screen that give back so much room in the living room. The thing we need now is a great tv stand which will make sure we take up much less room. So now that I have a TV that does not take up half the living room I need a stand that will take up only half the wall. It is so much fun to organize the living room now that I have more options.

Best Way To Help Your Kid

Many parents write in to EP about homework battles with their kids. They want to know what to do about a child who procrastinates or who just can’t seem to stay focused on the task at hand. This week James Lehman shares tried and true methods to get kids to sit down and do the work. Homework becomes a power struggle as soon as you try to force your child to do his work and he pushes back. Many parents are trapped in this battle nightly: they’re pulling one way while their child is pulling the other, and in the meantime, no work is getting done at all. Often, when kids start resisting, parents try to use power to get them to do their homework, but for many kids, that will only make matters worse. In fact, you may find that if you threaten your child with punishments or use power to get him to comply, he will simply become more aggressive and more defensive as he digs in his heels—and resists even more. Stop Smelling Like An Ashtray

My friend has been addicted to nicotine for so many years. I have always felt bad for him that he could not stop smoking. I could see that it was making him look so old and wrinkles in his face start to grow. But I found this new product for him. He can use the electronic cigarette which does not use the smoke to deliver the nicotine. I'm hoping that he can quit it all together but even if he does not quit now at least that smoke is gone and he is not making his face look old and making his car and house smell like an ashtray.

We Must Serve Or We Die

He Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve. Mark 10:45

Dr. Paul Brand told me of a memorable Frenchman named Pierre, who had served in Parliament until he became disillusioned with the slow pace of political change. During a harsh winter, many Parisian beggars froze to death. In desperation, Pierre became a friar to work among them and organize the beggars themselves.

They divided into teams to scour the city for bottles. Next, he led them to build a warehouse out of discarded bricks and start a business processing the bottles. Finally, he gave each beggar responsibility to help another poorer than himself. The project caught on. In a few a one to serve.”

At a leprosy colony in India, Pierre met patients worse off than his former beggars. Returning to France, he mobilized the beggars to build a leprosy ward at a hospital in India.

It is you who have saved us,” he told the grateful patients. “We must serve or we die.” Philip Yancey

Find a better Car insurance rate today

I have a friend who was in a couple of accidents in a short period of time. She was dropped by her insurance and was unable to find an insurance company who would give her a good rate. I told her that she should look for a good auto insurance quote online and she would find a better rate than before she had her accidents. She was surprised at how easy it was because she had never checked things out online. She was not quite able to find good rates better than before her accidents but she was able to find rates that were pretty close. So imagine if she had looked before her accidents!

Awkward Boy

The husband son is getting to that age when his face is starting to break out. Of course he is awkward enough without having those huge blemishes on his face. So I think that an acne treatment will really help his self esteem. Even better if we can find a natural product to get rid of the acne or at least make them not so frequent. It seem that for eternity it has been a battle for his age and though it will never go away at least there are natural ways today to tame it.

Off From Work Today

I am off from work today because the husband and I went to USCIS Baltimore for my biometrics. Last month I sent out my package for my I-1751 Removal of Conditions Status. Thankfully, it was quicker than I could imagine. So, today my appointment for my biometrics was 10 AM, it was just right time when we got there and in 5 minutes I was done. Much easier than I thought huh! Now, I just sit and relax while waiting for my approval and possibly my 10 yr green card-:) Last step will be my Citizenship. Btw, I have huge decision to make If I want to be an American Citizen or not hehe, hopefully next year. Will see..... Good luck to all who are still on the process, everything will be fine as long as you have everything they need.

Training On An Elliptical

Lately, the husband always tells me about his knee was in pain every time he went for a run. While he is trying to get into shape it is difficult to go out and run or even stay inside and use a tread mill. So he really is thinking about getting an elliptical trainer. Ellipticals have the advantage of having less impact on the joints. So you can put in the miles and the hours need to shed those unwanted pounds with out suffering afterward from those seriously debilitating joint aches. Sometimes, after a run he cannot walk for many days. So I know this will go along way to making him skinny once again.

Believe In Yourself

"For you have been my hope, O Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth." – Psalm 71:5 The glass elevator in our Tower of Hope was inspired by the El Cortez Hotel in San Diego. The owners of the elegant hotel decided they needed additional elevators, so they hired a group of architects and engineers to figure out the best location, both in terms of appearance and cost. If they put the elevators inside the hotel, they would have to cut a hole in all the floors. What a mess! Plaster dust would be everywhere. As the planners stood deliberating over where to place the elevators, a janitor overhead the conversation. He thought about the horrible mess the hotel was going to be in while all the reconstruction was going on. And the more he thought about it, the braver he became. Finally he approached the group of men and said, "Why don't you put the elevators outside the building?" Nobody had thought of that! The professionals listened and the idea clicked in their imagination. "Why not?" they said. "It's never been done before, but let's try and see how we could do it." So the elevators were built outside the El Cortez Hotel. Since then, many well-known buildings have done the same thing! Common people can be brilliant if they only believe in their own ideas! I don't care who you are. I don't care how poor you are. I don't care how educated you are. I don't care what your race it. I don't care where you are on the economic ladder. You have the same basic brain as any other human being! Believe in yourself. * * * Have you ever abandoned a "brilliant" idea because you lacked self-confidence? Maybe it's time to go back and take a second look!

Keep Away The Food

It was funny I keep buying slimmer for my shirt because I cannot help but eat too much. But I think better than to buy a slimmer would be to try an appetite suppressant. If the food does not pass between my lips then it will not settle on my hips. I am good until I get hungry then I eat what ever I see. Well, actually I am good for few hours and I can resist for then but eventually it over comes me and I break down and give in and eat. So if I could get rid of my appetite then I know for sure that I could keep these extra pounds off.

Keep Yourself Young Forever

Really, I am not as old as I look. I think the wrinkles around my eyes make me look old for sure! I think I need to try some wrinkle cream to hide those flaws which make me look old. Actually, I am not thinking about myself but my best friend. I look so young but she looks old because of her wrinkles. I have been smart enough for years to use cream to keep me youthful. If you look youthful then you feel young and so you are beautiful. It's up to you if you follow my lead so you don't end up like my friend looking old because of wrinkles!

Moving Coast to Coast

It is one think to move across town. You can usually arrange so that you can move out of one house and into the other on the same day. You can even use your own truck to get it done, or at least rent one on your own. But moving from one side of the country to the other is a different story all together. There is nothing like cross country moving because it is hard to entrust all your earthly possession to a stranger and then see if everything is there in one piece weeks or sometimes months later. Luckily, there are companies that help to make sure you find that right mover and save you some money at the same time.
